Shaving is such a daunting task, and we all hate it. But it has to be done, right? Well we can’t all just run around like wooly mammoths, we should just leave that for the men. But what about laser hair removal?
Yeah it’s expensive to go to a laser clinic and it takes time plus travel and making an appointment, who wants to do that? Not me. Doing laser hair removal at home is definitely the way to go, and now systems are very widely available and will save you a TON of cash, and time.
I know what you’re thinking, that’s great for someone who doesn’t have dark skin. Well, actually, it’s great for everyone. For a long time there has been no way for women with darker skin tones to have any kind of laser hair removal done at home because of the risk of discoloration to the skin. This is because darker skin has a higher level of melanin and the laser would pull that out of the skin, similar to when you put bleach in the wash with your jeans. However, due to the recent advances in technology women with darker skin tones can FINALLY use at home laser hair removal systems.
The way that most home laser hair removal machines work is that they use IPL or laser to essentially burn the hair away down to the follicle without harming the skin around it. It kind of pulls out the color from the hair in the process of killing the hair follicle, which is why most machines weren’t safe for women with darker skin. Until recently, there was never any market of these home hair removal machines to women of color, but that is slowly beginning to change. Multiple treatments will still be needed, as with all types of lasers, but it will vary from woman to woman.
The options for hair reduction system at home are still quite limited, but that’s to be expected in the beginning. There is a machine that was just FDA approved for use on darker skin tones called the Tanda Me. And it’s been approved for darker skin use, certainly a step in the right direction! The Me system is the only one of its kind that uses both IPL and RF or radio frequency and it is the only system to be approved by the FDA for use on dark skin tones. So far, this system has been getting some really great reviews and seems like an excellent choice for women of varying skin tones and hair colors. There is no longer a reason for women who have darker skin to waste tons of money going and getting their hair laser removal treatments at a professional. Technology is advancing and as a result it is leveling the playing field in what we can do from home, saving not only money but time as well. As more studies are done on these hair removal machine to use at home and more technology is developed, there will be many more options to choose from. Every woman should be able to take care of their hair removal in the comfort of their own home, and that is the ultimate goal.
